Embrace Yourself, Others And God

KUALA LUMPUR:-Thousands of Catholic flocked to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Kuala Lumpur south and Chapel of Our Lady of Good Health in Kampung Pandan on Good Friday, March 31, 2018.

At the Chapel in Kg Pandan, Parish Administrator who is also parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church led in the Good Friday Service that begins at 3pm.

Meanwhile at the Sacred Heart Church Deacon Simon Lau led in the Good Friday Services at 1pm and 7.30pm. The Church was also packed to the hilt.

In his homily at the evening Service, where Fr Edwin was also present, Deacon Lau said today has an important word to give you all. 'The word is to die'. All of us do not want to die, just as Peter when Jesus being threaten, Peter took out his sword and fight and want to be strong to win. The people at that time were hoping for a victorious Saviour. Just like Judas, to die is not easy.

Deacon Lau who will be ordain a diocesan priest on May 1, 2018 went on to say what the prostrating that he did just now below the sanctuary, at the beginning of the Good Friday Service. He said it means to lay down one life, dying (as he representing the assembly); just like Jesus laying His life for us.

Today Good Friday, the service has three parts. Some priests and deacons or even bishop might need to read again (about today's service procedures), as this is once a year celebration. The kissing (or veneration) of the cross, what does this means? Kissing of the cross means we embrace the cross. We embrace Jesus, we embrace our brokenness in us. What type of kiss we are willing to give to Jesus? Judas betrayed Jesus by giving Him a kiss. What type of kiss?. Are we able to heal the brokenness in us?

Those going to be baptize tomorrow (Easter Vigil), we are called to die today. To die in Christ is not easy. Painful. We don't want to touch the brokenness in us, the pain, the hurts, the un-forgiveness in us. Unless you go and offer up your brokenness to Jesus and let go of all or everything to Him. Otherwise it won't work.( You will need to die to sin, die to self, die to un-forgiveness). Deacon Lau invited the assembly to recall and see the inner brokenness of all of us and those suffering in the world. He told the assembly we need to embrace ourselves, we need to embrace others and we need to embrace God in our hearts. "Embrace the brokenness in ourselves and embrace the people in the world , then also to embrace God".

Deacon Lau also mentioned that in the Good Friday Service, there is the Solemn prayers, where the faithful pray for those who do not know God, and pray for Mother Church, those in authority, among others. We must embrace others."If you want to live, you must die; if you want to be rich, you must be poor. The Beatitudes said if you want to be happy, you got to be sad; if you want Kingdom of God, you must suffer and be persecuted".

In concluding, Deacon Lau invited all the faithful to pray to God that we will be united, while in the world and in Christ. "When we receive the Body of Christ in communion, the Bread (Body) broken for us; in unity with us". If we can't understand, then something is not right with us.

Deacon Lau preached in both English and Mandarin. Fr Edwin preached briefly in Tamil.

After Communion has ended, about 8 Crosses were brought forward for the veneration of the Cross. All the faithful took part.

Good Friday is a holy-day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. It is traditionally a day of fasting and abstinence.

In most parishes in Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese, there will be praying and reflecting on the Stations of the Cross, preceding the Good Friday Service. The Gospel narrates how Jesus Christ who came from the Father undergo His humiliation and suffers for us sinners and for the whole humanity. The pain Jesus took and dying on the Cross, to redeem us, because He loves us and God wants to save us from sin and hell.
