On 26th October 2025, around 55 catechism students from form 1-4 together with their teachers came for an ecological talk organised by the creation justice ministry of sacred heart church, jalan peel, kuala lumpur.
The title of the talk was ‘Pilgrims of Hope: Stewardship & Creating Awareness for Care for Creation’ by Dr Celine Chong, a lecturer from National University of Singapore. The talk started with her asking the students guessing what was her occupation. She is an environmental scientist doing her post doctorate at National University of SIngapore. She shared an alarming rate of forests are lost at a rate equivalent to a football field every 2 to 5 seconds due to deforestation and fires, with some recent estimates suggesting even higher losses, such as 18 football fields per minute. The primary drivers are human activities like agriculture, logging, and resource extraction, exacerbated by increasingly severe wildfires caused by climate change.
She shared some of the ways where we could practice at home and school how we could be ecologically friendly. For example, refusing to use single used plastics, switch off lights at home when not in use and join an ecology club at school.
After the talk, she also ensured we made a pledge to be conscious of our lifestyle to be more ecological friendly. The talk ended with the hope it inspires more students to be pilgrims of hope towards care for our common home.
